The re-election campaign of Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday launched a digital ad and petition campaign that supports the passage of a so-called “red flag” bill meant to keep firearms away from those deemed to be an extreme risk to themselves or others.
“New York will not stand idly by while Washington remains gridlocked on gun reform – hopelessly beholden to the gun lobby and the NRA,” Cuomo said. “We want to take the next step in New York and continue to make this state safer for everyone, while setting an example for the nation. The time for action and common-sense reform is now. Call your legislator today to pass the Red Flag bill to save lives.”
The campaign was first reported by[1] The Daily News this morning and formally rolled out by the Cuomo campaign.
Cuomo has expressed skepticism that Republicans in the narrowly divided Senate will support the legislation. The Senate GOP did allow for the vote and passage of a bill in March, coinciding with the state budget approval, that gun possession tightens restrictions on those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence.
Gun control has been a signature issue for Cuomo, who in 2013 won passage of the SAFE Act, a measure he’s hailed as a major victory against gun violence, but one that has inflamed Second Amendment advocates as well as voters upstate.
