If we want to avoid a repeal of the Second Amendment, as advocated by former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens[1], it’s time to act now to pass significant gun reform.

The rise in mass shootings and the hundreds who die daily from gun violence in our country have reached crisis levels, and public demand for gun-safety laws is clear and growing, as shown by the massive support for the Parkland students’ March for Our Lives March 24.

But gun-safety reform favored by those of us in Moms Demand Action does not call for Second Amendment repeal. Instead, we favor:

  • Universal background checks.
  • Banning assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.
  • Raising the legal age to purchase firearms to 21.
National Rifle Association money has perverted politicians’ view of the Second Amendment, resulting in an all-or-nothing view of gun rights. If we don’t vote out NRA-funded politicians standing in the way of common-sense gun safety legislation, the Second Amendment may be in danger.
