One of the criticisms of President Donald Trump is that he tends to agree with the last person to talk to him on an issue. That seems to be evident with the president’s statements on gun control since the school shooting in Parkland, Florida on Feb. 14.
Speaking at the Conservative Liberal Action Conference on Feb. 23, Trump warned the conservatives to not be complacent in the 2018 electoin, that Democrats would “take away your Second Amendment… we will never allow that.”
Then last Wednesday, at a round table on gun control with Congressional Democrats and Republicans, Trump got on the Republicans for being afraid of the NRA, endorsed ideas proposed by Democrats, and when asked about what police should do about potentially dangerous people with guns, he said, “Take the guns first, go through due process second.”
On Thursday, Trump met with the NRA and apparently reassured them that he is in agreement with most of their agenda, though he still thinks the different age limit for buying rifles and handguns doesn’t make much sense.
We don’t know if Congress is going to find the political wherewithal to actually pass a gun control bill (the president said he wants a “beautiful” one), but until they do and the president has it on his desk, we may not know exactly what he thinks about gun control.
