COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (June 21, 2018)
Seventeen Junior USA Shooting Rifle and Pistol athletes have made their way to Suhl, Germany to compete in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup. The event begins tomorrow with action concluding on June 29.
The American athletes attending this Junior World Cup are also part of the team that will compete at the ISSF World Championship in Changwon, South Korea later this summer. These athletes earned their slots to the World Championship with their performances at this year’s National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) in April.
For most of this team, this isn’t their first trip to Suhl as many of these athletes have competed there previously, including the 2017 Junior World Championship for Rifle/Pistol. Morgan Phillips (Salisbury, Maryland) will look to build on her performances last year where she finished in fourth place in Women’s Three-Position Rifle and in eighth place in Women’s Prone Rifle. At the USA Shooting National Championships last week, Phillips may have finished in fourth overall in the Three-Position Rifle event, but she was posting world-class, Open-level (Adult) scores in Women’s Three-Position Rifle on both days. She was also the top finisher in the event at NJOSC.
Though Elizabeth Marsh (Searcy, Arkansas) didn’t compete in Suhl last year, look for strong performances from her as well as she was the only female Rifle athlete to qualify for the World Championship Team in Air and Three-Position Rifle, winning gold in Air and silver in Three-Position at NJOSC. Last week at the National Championships, she posted world-class, Open-level scores on both days in the Women’s Three-Position Rifle competition to win the Open-level bronze and earn a slot on the National Team.
